In ‘The Abyss Beneath’ the landscape around Levant is laid bare. Miners cottages are nestled into the slopes but there is a sense of instability and ‘collapse’ in the way they lean towards the mine shaft. A zig zag of shapes make reference to the supports of the shaft and the presence of the man engine used to move miners up and down between the tunnels and the surface.
